IISc Bangalore in Top 500 Academic Ranking of World Universities 2014

The 2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has been released by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. 

Starting from 2003, ARWU has been presenting the world Top 500 universities annually, based on transparent methodology and reliable data. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore is the only Indian institute in top 500 list of Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU) 2014. According to ARWU, IISc has been placed in rankings between 301-400. Harvard University remains the number one in the world for the 12th consecutive year. 

The other universities in the top 10 list are: Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, Cambridge, Princeton, Caltech, Columbia, Chicago and Oxford. IISC has received impressive subject-wise rankings as well. It has been placed at a rank between 151-200 in Science. In English, IISC appears in the 101-150 rank category, Chemistry ranking is between 51-75 and for Computer Science it has been placed in the 101-150 rank category. Selection of Universities: ARWU considers all universities that have any Nobel laureates, field medalists, highly-cited researchers, or papers published in Nature or Science. In addition, universities with significant amount of papers indexed by Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) are also included. In total, more than 1200 universities are actually ranked and the best 500 are published on the web. 

Ranking Criteria: Universities are ranked by several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution.
